The high-level overviewof the Mini Japanese language workshop for the MISTI-Japan interns.
Scope of the Course: The target audience of this course is initially for MISTI-Japan interns. (*Based on this trial course, we would like to develop a new course called “Japanese for professional communication” in the future, and plan to expand its scope for more general audience.)
Workshop goals: This workshop aims to introduce:
- (i) Japanese language skills necessary for MISTI-interns’ professional communication;
- (ii) manners in the Japanese business settings;
- (iii) useful expressions in various business and social contexts;
- (iv) technical terms relevant to your field;
- (v) ways to express your opinions; agreements or disagreements; make a request;
- (vi) expressions useful for the eating and the drinking situations
- (vii) cultural and linguistic knowledge on Japanese dialects, Aizuchi, Japanese ‘yes and no’, etc.
Requirements/Who should attend:
- MISTI-interns OR those who have 2 years of Japanese langauge training at MIT /equivalent
Intended Outcomes:
The takeaways of the participants of this workshop include (but not limited to):
- Be able to introduce themselves;
- Be able to exchange proper greetings in various professional settings;
- Be able to seek advice/help in various contexts;
- Be able to make reservations; place orders; make various types of appointments;
- Be able to express their opinions or reject other’s opinion (agree or disagree);
- Be able to socialize with colleagues and friends smoothly;
- Be able to look up technical terms by themselves;
- Be able to write/read a simple email; telephone conversation; messages; etc.
- Be able to understand the communication at a convenience store; including ATM, copy machine, delivery service;
- Be able to take care of their health (doctor’s appointment)
